Different people think different things on this topic. Some will tell you that you shouldn’t listen to music while you work because it can be distracting. That will bring me onto my first part of the discussion.
My opinion? I think the only kind of music you can listen to while working is classical. Something like my favourite: Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major, BWV 1007: I. Prelude – I am listening to this while I am typing this to prove a point.
The reason I say that you should only listen to classical music is because of surprise surprise, there are no lyrics to distract you. When you have lyrics you are immediately trying to listen to what they are saying and therefore not paying attention to the work in front of you.
Well, the answer to that is… no. Some people cannot have any distraction, they need complete silence or they will end up listening to the full 9:27 like the length of the youtube video I tagged. When I was in high school there was no way that I could study with music. I kept trying to fool myself by saying that I was studying. I remember I would study for hours on end and look back at my notes and have no memory of writing them. That is the hazard of studying with music that has lyrics.
The best way to come up with a study technique is to test it out – now I do not mean go and test it out before a huge final or before you have a board meeting. I mean in your own time, develop a study or work style that suits you. In the long run, you will start seeing the benefit of it like I have.
